Golf Bag and Cart: How to Choose a Stand, Cart or Carry Bag

Golf bag and cart: 14-way divider cart bag

A cart bag suits a golf buggy or trolley because it has a flat top, full-length dividers and a stable base, while a stand bag has legs and a lighter build for carrying. This guide to the golf bag and cart combination explains stand, cart and carry bags and how to choose a golf club bag for a buggy.

Cart bags for buggies and trolleys

A cart bag is built to sit on a buggy. A flat top and full-length dividers keep the clubs from tangling and make them easy to pull out. We stock a Golf Cart Bag (14-Way Divider) at $299 and a Big Max Dri Lite Premium Cart Bag at $395.

Stand bags

A stand bag has legs that flip out so it stands up on the course, and it is lighter to carry. We stock a Lightweight Golf Stand Bag at $215. You can put a stand bag on a buggy, but its legs and shape can sit awkwardly on the frame.

Carry bags

A carry bag is the lightest option, with no stand and few pockets. It suits short rounds, practice sessions and a quick nine holes.

Men's, women's and black golf bags

Bags come in men's and women's styles with different colours and trim. Black is a popular, practical colour that hides dirt. The most important thing is that the bag fits your buggy and has enough pockets for your gear.

How to check a bag fits your buggy

  1. Check the width of the base of the bag against the bag well on your buggy.
  2. Check how the bag attaches: straps, a cradle or a clip.
  3. Place a loaded bag on the buggy and push it a few metres to check it stays stable.
  4. Make sure the bag does not block the handle, controls or console.

Bag features checklist

  • Dividers: full-length dividers keep clubs apart and easier to pull.
  • Pockets: room for balls, tees, a rain jacket, drinks and valuables.
  • Rain hood: handy in wet weather.
  • Straps and handles: comfortable if you ever carry it.
  • Base: flat and stable if it sits on a buggy.

Looking after your bag

Empty it after wet rounds and let it dry in a ventilated space. Wipe dirt from the base and pockets, and keep zips lubricated with a dry silicone spray. A rain cover for the bag, such as the Sand / Wet-Weather Tyres & Bag Rain Cover at $49, keeps clubs and grips dry in wet weather.

Travelling with a bag

A soft travel bag such as the Soft Golf Travel Bag at $215 protects clubs on the road and on flights. Check the airline's baggage rules for size, weight and fees before you travel, and pad the club heads.

Common bag mistakes

  • Choosing a stand bag for a buggy without checking how it sits.
  • Buying a bag with too few dividers, so clubs tangle.
  • Overloading a stand bag until it is heavy to carry.
  • Skipping a rain cover and leaving grips wet.
  • Leaving the bag in a hot car, where heat damages grips and shafts.

Packing a bag: what goes where

Put the longest clubs at the back and the shortest at the front, or follow the dividers. Keep balls, tees and gloves in one side pocket and rain gear and a towel in another. Put valuables in a lined pocket and keep a few spare tees and a pitch mark repairer handy. Use the accessory pocket for a drink or phone, and clear out wrappers after each round.

Your questions answered

A cart bag is best for a buggy or trolley because the flat top and full-length dividers keep clubs organised and the base sits securely on the frame. Our cart bags are $299 and $395. See golf bags. Check the divider layout suits your clubs.
