Lead-acid, AGM or lithium?

  • Flooded lead-acid is the cheapest to buy but heavy, and needs regular topping up with water.
  • AGM lead-acid is sealed and maintenance-free, at a higher price.
  • Lithium (LiFePO4) costs the most upfront, weighs far less and needs no maintenance.

Our guide to lithium versus lead-acid batteries goes into the detail.

How to tell it is time to replace

  • The cart runs out of charge much sooner than it used to.
  • It charges slowly or the charger never finishes.
  • Voltage drops sharply when you accelerate or climb.
  • Cases are swollen, cracked or leaking.

Matching voltage and size

Golf cart batteries are sold as sets that make up the cart's voltage, so a 48V cart needs 48V of batteries in total. A set can be eight 6V batteries, four 12V batteries, or one 48V lithium pack. Check the voltage on your cart, the tray size and your charger before you order. Lithium packs need a lithium-compatible charger: see our chargers.

Warranty: read it line by line

Every product states its own warranty. The GIANT 48V 100Ah lithium drop-in lists 5-Year Australian Replacement Warranty, and our Trojan lead-acid sets list 1-Year Australian Manufacturer Warranty. Compare cost against warranty, not price alone. Brands we stock include Trojan and GIANT.

Comparing cost against warranty

Price alone is a poor guide. One simple measure is cost per year of warranty cover. This is not a lifespan, but it shows what you are paying for the cover on offer:

Battery optionPriceWarrantyPrice per warranty year
Century Golf Cart Battery Set (36V / 48V)$1,7641-Year Australian Manufacturer Warranty$1,764
GIANT 48V 100Ah Drop-In Golf Cart LiFePO4 Lithium Battery$1,7995-Year Australian Replacement Warranty$360
Trojan T875 Flooded Battery Set (48V)$2,1991-Year Australian Manufacturer Warranty$2,199
Trojan T1275 12V Battery Set (48V)$2,4991-Year Australian Manufacturer Warranty$2,499
Trojan GC2 Lithium Battery (48V / 24V)$2,5795-Year Australian Replacement Warranty$516
Trojan T105 Flooded Battery Set (48V, 8 Batteries)$2,6401-Year Australian Manufacturer Warranty$2,640
Voltrac Flex Lithium Conversion Kit (E-Z-GO RXV / Club Car 48V)$2,8955-Year Australian Replacement Warranty$579
Trojan AGM PRO Maintenance-Free Battery Set (48V)$3,1271-Year Australian Manufacturer Warranty$3,127

A longer warranty on a higher-priced lithium pack can work out cheaper per year than a short warranty on a cheaper set. Check the terms of each warranty before you rely on this.

Converting a cart to lithium

If your cart has a lead-acid set, a conversion kit can swap it for lithium. Our Voltrac Flex Lithium Conversion Kit (E-Z-GO RXV / Club Car 48V) fits E-Z-GO RXV and Club Car 48V carts and is $2,895. Confirm your cart and charger before you order, and call 0480 811 308 if you are unsure.

Charging and care after a replacement

  • Use the charger made for the new battery type.
  • Charge a new set fully before the first drive.
  • Keep batteries out of direct heat.
  • Check terminals and connections every few months.

How to replace a battery set safely

  1. Switch the cart off, remove the key and put it in tow or maintenance mode.
  2. Photograph the wiring and label each cable before disconnecting.
  3. Disconnect from the negative end of the pack first.
  4. Lift each battery carefully; lead-acid batteries are heavy.
  5. Clean the trays and terminals, fit the new set and reconnect in the original order.
  6. Charge fully with the correct charger before the first drive.

Lead-acid batteries contain acid. Wear gloves and eye protection, and ask us if you are unsure. Call 0480 811 308 to match a battery to your cart.
