Ladies Golf Clubs and Women's Golf Sets: What to Look For

Ladies golf clubs: ladies' complete golf club set

Ladies golf clubs are lighter, shorter and have a more flexible shaft than standard men's clubs, which helps players with a slower swing speed get the ball airborne. This guide to ladies golf clubs explains what is different, how to choose a golf set for women and what our Ladies' Complete Golf Club Set offers at $799.

Ladies golf clubs: what makes them different

FeatureMen's clubsLadies' clubs
Shaft flexRegular or stiffMore flexible (ladies flex)
LengthLongerShorter
WeightHeavierLighter
LoftStandardOften slightly higher on long clubs, for easier launch

These are typical differences. Always check the specifications of the set you are buying.

Shaft flex and swing speed

Shaft flex should match your swing speed. A flexible shaft helps a slower swing load the club and launch the ball. A shaft that is too stiff feels hard to swing and can lead to low, short shots. A fitting session or a simple test with a few clubs shows what suits you.

Length and fit

Club length should suit your height and posture. Shorter players often need shorter clubs, and taller players may need standard or longer clubs. If you are unsure, ask us before you order.

Choosing a ladies golf club set

Look for a set that includes everything you need to play: driver, fairway wood or hybrid, irons, wedge, putter and a bag. Complete sets are better value than buying clubs one at a time while you learn.

A simple fitting check at home

  1. Stand up straight with your arms relaxed by your sides.
  2. Measure from your wrist crease to the floor and compare it to the maker's size chart.
  3. Hold a club in your address position and check you can stand comfortably without stretching or hunching.
  4. Take a few slow swings and check the club feels easy to swing.

Glossary: ladies club terms

  • Flex: how much the shaft bends in the swing. Ladies flex is the most flexible standard option.
  • Loft: the angle of the clubface, which sets launch height. See our wedge degrees guide.
  • Lie angle: the angle between the shaft and the ground when the sole sits flat. The wrong lie angle can send shots left or right.
  • Swing weight: how heavy the club feels when you swing it, which is different from its total weight.
  • MOI (moment of inertia): how resistant the head is to twisting on off-centre hits. Higher is more forgiving.

Looking after your clubs

Wipe the heads and grooves after each round, dry the clubs before putting them away and keep them in a bag cover or head covers. Store them somewhere dry and out of a hot car. Check the grips for wear every year or two, since slippery grips make you squeeze harder and lose feel.

Getting started: a first-month plan

  1. Book a lesson or two to build a good grip, stance and swing.
  2. Spend your first range sessions with short irons and wedges.
  3. Add a putting mat at home for five minutes a day.
  4. Play a few holes with a friend on a short or quiet course.
  5. After a month, note which clubs feel good and which do not.

Etiquette basics

Keep up with the group in front, repair divots and pitch marks, rake bunkers and stay quiet when others hit. Let faster players through. Good etiquette makes golf more enjoyable for everyone, and clubs notice it.

Your questions answered

Ladies clubs are usually lighter and shorter with a more flexible shaft, which suits slower swing speeds and helps get the ball airborne. Men's clubs are longer and stiffer. Choose by swing speed and height rather than label alone. Fit matters more than the label.
